EMDR Therapy for Trauma & PTSD: Ripple effect of trauma on our lives.
The ripple effect of water often mirrors that of the impact of trauma.

What Is EMDR Treatment for Trauma & PTSD?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy is a highly effective treatment for trauma and PTSD. It works by activating both sides of the brain through bilateral stimulation techniques in an effort to self-regulate. As an experienced EMDR therapist, I have received specialized training in this evidence-based psychotherapy approach. This allows me to help you effectively reprocess traumatic memories. This will help you begin to feel more in control of your life.

By integrating EMDR into our treatment plan, we can address the impact of trauma on the past, present, and future. This therapy not only reduces symptoms but also empowers individuals and promotes healing. As a therapist with extensive EMDR training, I recognize the value of this approach in the treatment of PTSD. It offers hope and transformative results, allowing individuals to overcome the effects of trauma and reclaim their lives.

Who Can Benefit from Seeing an EMDR Therapist?

Who can benefit from Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy? Well, EMDR treatment, a highly effective treatment for PTSD and anxiety disorders, is effective for individuals who have experienced various types of trauma, including but not limited to:

  • People with PTSD: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy, known for its ability to target memory and change the way traumatic events are processed, is widely recognized as an effective treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder. It helps individuals process traumatic memories, reduce distressing symptoms, and improve overall well-being.
  • People Who Have Experienced Childhood Trauma: EMDR therapy can be beneficial for individuals who have experienced childhood abuse, neglect, or other adverse experiences. By addressing the negative emotions and physical sensations associated with these early traumas, EMDR treatment promotes healing and the development of new thoughts and perspectives.
  • Those Who Have Been Involved In Accidents and/or Natural Disasters: EMDR treatment can assist individuals who have been involved in accidents or have experienced natural disasters in processing the associated trauma. By reprocessing the disturbing event and the body sensations linked to it, EMDR helps reduce distressing symptoms and promote emotional resilience.
  • Military Veterans & Those Who Have Witnessed Violence: EMDR treatment has shown promise in helping military veterans with PTSD and trauma-related issues resulting from their service. By facilitating the information processing of traumatic experiences, EMDR can help veterans overcome the negative emotions and physical sensations associated with their past traumas, leading to improved quality of life.
  • Survivors of Sexual Assault: EMDR treatment can be beneficial for individuals who have experienced sexual assault or other forms of sexual trauma. By addressing the body sensations and distressing emotions associated with the trauma, this therapy aids in processing the experience and reducing its psychological and emotional impact, allowing for healing and recovery.

What To Expect In EMDR Therapy: Phases of the EMDR Process

During our EMDR sessions, we will follow a structured approach that involves eight phases of EMDR therapy:

1. History taking:

I will gather information about your personal history, trauma, and current symptoms to develop a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your needs.

2. Preparation:

Together, we will work on developing coping skills and relaxation techniques to ensure you feel adequately prepared for the emotional processing that will take place during therapy.

3. Assessment:

I will identify the specific traumatic memories that we will target for reprocessing, based on our discussions and your experiences.

4. Desensitization:

You will focus on a specific traumatic memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or taps. This phase aims to reduce the emotional intensity associated with the memory

5. Installation:

We will introduce positive beliefs and self-statements to replace any negative beliefs that may have developed as a result of the trauma. This will help cultivate a more adaptive and positive mindset.

6. Body scan:

I will guide you in scanning your body for any residual tension or discomfort related to the traumatic memory. Addressing any physical manifestations of the trauma can promote relaxation and overall well-being.

7. Closure:

Each EMDR session will conclude with a debriefing and relaxation exercise to ensure you feel stable and grounded before leaving the therapy session. This will help you transition out of the intense emotional processing and promote a sense of safety.

8. Reevaluation:

Throughout the therapy process, I will regularly reassess your progress and determine if further sessions are necessary. This will ensure that the therapy remains tailored to your specific needs and goals.
